Culture Vulture article archives

Hello friends, family, and avid readers!
Thanks for dropping by to read previous Culture Vulture columns.
You can find my latest column by going to www.roanoke.com,
clicking on Entertainment, then Arts (if you can find it). Or,
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-index.
Articles are usually run every two weeks, and the Inside Out
weekend tabloid section it appears in comes out Thursdays.

I'd like to thank my fabulous editor at the Roanoke Times, Stephanie Ogilvie.
She's a dream to work with, and seems to really appreciate my ideas and my
innate writing style. (Or, did she say "inmate writing style"?)

Okay, here are the columns thus far. Links will open in a new window:

#1  Are you living in color?
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-28242
Introductory column. Basically, an artsy-fartsy diatribe.

#2  Who is an artist?
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-29344
Second introductory column, exploring entitlement and art/creation (or lack thereof).

#3  Nice art, farmer!: Slow art from the fast lane
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-31170
Artists who create on a huge scale, yet don't get recognition for their creativity.

#4  Moo-la-la: Fabulous cows of Craig County
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-32434
Cows as art? I smell a coffee table art book on the horizon (or is that methane?).

#5 Thrift Store Art, part 1
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-34014
Explores an interesting, affordable genre of art collecting. Take the Bonus Art Quiz!
Can you tell which painting is hanging in a prestigious DC gallery, and which is thrift store art?

#6 Piggyback Art: Thrift Store Art part deux
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-35924
The "diabolical art" of Eddie Breen is featured. Eddie finds thrift store or trash pile
art and "paints into it". See if you like what he did to the thrift store painting
shown in article #5 above.

#7 Be an Artist (or just sell like one)
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-37953
There's a hot spot for creators to sell their art and budding collectors to buy art.
It's a wonderful place where all kinds of people come together, and it has
transformed many art dabblers into "working artists." Introduces ACEOs.

#8 The Museum of Fred
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-39944
Why not spend the day visiting other museums? This column material is why I
wanted to write the column in the first place. There are so many wonderful museums
to see online, it's a museum rat's paradise. Also introduces one of my favorite sites,
the Museum of Temporary Art, where anyone can have a submission displayed
(providing you follow the submission guidelines).

#9 Virtual Portfolios
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-41920
Instead of trying to make a whole web site to showcase your art or other creations,
which no one will know to come to anyway, utilize these FREE online portfolio and gallery space
services. Mentions the online galleries of Lolo Monae and Emperial Young.

#10 Beauty-full Books
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-43646
The books mentioned in this column would make a wonderful gift for so many different
types of people. They're not books about art, rather, they are so beautifully photographed,
and their subjects are so amazing to behold...well, the pictures in these books are worth
more than 1,000 words, so I'll stop gushing right here.

#11 Pining for Tile
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-45388
Oh MAN I love tile, and the links provided in this article can really brighten up a gloomy winter
day, or inspire me to really create something beautiful for my home. See if you agree, and
whether or not you, too, have a "tile jones" going on!

#12 Intelligent Design
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-47016
My editors may be nervous at this title, but I'm not referring to divine creation (although,
I have seen some divine art lately). Instead, I'm referring to a realm of the art world that
combines science and scholarly activities with artistic talent, sensitivity, and vision.
Specifically, paleontological artists and medical illustrators. You GOTTA visit the great
links provided, and you can find a used copy of the recommended book, Haeckel's "Art
Forms in Nature," which will not disappoint.

#13 79-cent Art
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-48891
Already ran through your holiday money? You can still make great art, from things you
use in everyday life. Features the amazing work of Amy Orr and Songyi Kim. Their work is
stunning. Mentions Rueben Williams.

OUR MUSEUM OF TEMPORARY ART EXHIBITS ARE ON DISPLAY!
http://www.museum-of-temporary-art.com/theexhibits We are exhibits 2, 4, 8, 11, 16, 29 and 31.
See the "Museum of Fred" article above for details. Thanks to all who participated: Lloyd Wiser,
Djelila Stamatovic, Neil Harvey, Matthew Dowdy and Tad Dickens. I now have your certificates of
exhibition, so drop me an email at CulturevultureVA "at" gmail.com.

#14 Genuine Imitations
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/xp-50858
"Starving Artists Group" art sales and "Painter of Light" Thomas Kinkade. What do they have
in common? You'd be surprised. This is probably my best column yet. I don't like the subject
matter, but I do have something to say about what motivates these artists, and the people
who buy their work.

#15 Compelled to Create
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/stories/wb/52774
Compulsive artists...they can't help it, they HAVE to do what they do! This column mentions
Purvis Young, Howard Finster, and Roanoke artist CJ Phillips. It also mentions Barbara Young,
who was instrumental in presenting the work of Purvis Young, and presenting stunning, unusual
exhibits of art through the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Thanks, Barbara!

#16 The Glass Master
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/wb/xp-54884
OMG OMG OH MY GOSH how I love the work of probably the world's most wonderful glass artist,
Dale Chihuly. Dale's got a magnificent (can you hear me panting on this end?) exhibit going on
through May 31st at Fairchild Gardens in Miami Florida. It's acres and acres of lush tropical plants
and luminous, glorious glass art pieces. This is as close to heaven on earth as I might get. And yet,
my own mother, a fantastic artist (and implanter and nurturer of my love of art), my dear marmy has
not yet seen this outdoor exhibit, even though she only lives a few miles away, and likes Fairchild.
This is both sad and ironic. Don't make me come down there and haul your twinkletoes into the
Chihuly show myself, Mamacita! (That's probably JUST what she wants...). Anyway, read the
article, and if you are ever in the same city as a Chihuly installation, make the trek to see it.
[[ End of rant...if you know my Mom, make her go with you to Fairchild, please! ]]

#17 Show me Yours!
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/wb/xp-56846
Submit to your vulture, I say, SUBMIT! Er, that is, submit or nominate someone or something
you know of to the following categories (which could be featured in future columns):
~Nominate an art teacher or professor whose recent work you find especially cool
~Submit an image of your favorite artwork from your child or relative
~Submit an image of a homemade toy or plaything that's unique or innovative
For details, read the column, then.................SUBMIT!

#18 Doing Museums
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/58806
Two recent forays into our nation's capital prompted this column, which mentions the Renwick
Museum, the National Gallery of Art (and their great shows at the time), and tips for doing
museums without getting done in by the process.

#19 Wild Beasts
http://www.roanoke.com/entertainment/insideout/arts/wb/60667
This column discusses Fauvism, recommends a spiffy online art dictionary, and recognizes a local
elementary school girl who was brave enough to paint a blue sky the color of flaming fire.

Upcoming columns will include the Child Art submissions I received (from "Show me Yours").
Also to come -- an article on art teachers' art, and whether teaching art positively or negatively
affects an artist's creative output. This has so many aspects to it that it might warrant being
expanded into a feature-length article in the Roanoke Times' Extra section (fingers crossed!).

++++++++++++  --  ++++++++++++  --  ++++++++++++

Check back here every few weeks, or if you missed a few articles and don't want
to feel uncomfortable at the next Family Feast.
There WILL be a pop quiz...

Creatively yours...
